Smart routing produces dynamic optimisations for payment acceptance. It can have signicant impact on
enhancing key elements of the payment process, such as authorisation rates and cost savings, potentially in
real-time. The use of smart routing has become a growing trend in the industry. Our survey ndings identied that
75% of merchants are already carrying out smart routing, regardless
of the number of payment partner relationships a merchant has.
However, we are seeing a link between the number of payment partner relationships a merchant has and
whether smart routing is conducted in-house. Smart routing tends to be carried-out by the payment partner
when merchants have 2-5 payment partner contracts (47%). Whereas, merchants who have more than 10
payment partner contracts tend to carry-out smart routing in-house (64%). Large merchants with many
payment partner relations are likely to have established payment teams that are more experienced in
managing multiple relationships implementing some elements of smart routing in-house.
