6. Discounts and familiar payment methods increase their buying appetite
There are several factors that inuence the way Chinese shoppers decide how and how much to spend
when abroad. We have already mentioned product availability and shopping experience as key aspects.
Discounts, price, and quality of the item are important factors as well. For Chinese travellers, the overall
travel budget and absolute price of goods has less effect on their shopping decisions compared to their
non-Chinese counterparts. On the other hand, the relative price of goods after discount is the stronger lever
(41%) that pushes them to shop overseas, together with product quality (39%).
The relative new factor playing a crucial role in this scenario is the payment method supported by the local
merchant. Chinese tourists spending abroad think that the payment methods supported by local
merchants are a key factor in driving them to the counter (41%), as important as the absolute price and the
relative price of the goods they are planning to buy. Regardless of shoppers age or travel destination, the
decision to buy is heavily inuenced by the local merchant’s ability to accept mobile payment methods such
as Alipay or WeChat Pay. Offering these payment methods can powerfully push the decision to nalise the
purchase.
